Last november we posted a brief on Geraldo Rivera's plan to air a special report on the plight of thousands of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families that languish on years-long waiting lists for services. Florida shamefully boasts over 16,000 children and adults who rot in an archipelago of shame...the dread wait list.
Back in the day Geraldo cut his investigative reporting teeth on a story about the brutal and inhumane conditions at a New York institution called Willowbrook. This infamous place housed people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in conditions that appalled the nation and struck its collective conscience.
We have a new form of "institution" called waiting lists where people languish for years without the proper care and support they need to maintain good lives.
It is hope that Geraldo will do a good job in bringing this untold story to the America people. Watch for his program Geraldo Live on your Fox TV affiliate at 10:00 eastern time December 27, 2008. GO GERALDO!!
