The call went out for an observance of the anniversary of 9-11 by the men and women who attend SunriseArc's day program. Why no one thought to video the event was a blunder...because it was a moving experience to see people with disabilities gathered to remember such a awful national tragedy. We have no record of it other than what remains in our hearts.
One young man, Michael, was asked to read his thoughts and observations about the tragic events of that day. Michael stood proudly to read his memorial that was touching and heart-rendering...and there were very few dry eyes after he finished his tribute.
Later Michael was asked to speak before a gathering of friends at a fundraiser for SunriseArc and in his own words said: "My life is not a disability. It's a possibility because I can do all things through the One who strengthens me." He went on to say "I realize that I am a part of a unique fabric that represents the foundation of (the) Arc".
Michael is a young man with autism. But that is not who he is. He is a poet, a writer, an one who inspires us all to see ourselves as possibilities...
